Custom tees turn a blank everyday garment into a brand carrier, through print, colour and labelling. The difference between a good custom tee and a disappointing one is usually decided before printing begins, in the choice of blank, the artwork preparation and the print method. This page explains how a custom tee brief should be put together, so that the printed sample matches the buyer's expectation.

The blank comes first. Fabric, fit, colour and neckline construction all affect how a print looks and lasts, and a blank chosen only for price may not suit the intended print. Buyers should state the intended print method, the print size and placement, and the number of colours, and should ask whether the blank and print combination has been checked for wash durability. A sample printed with the actual artwork, washed and worn, is the only reliable test; a digital mockup alone will hide problems with placement, colour and cracking.

Artwork preparation is the second decision. Buyers should supply artwork in a usable form, with colours specified by reference rather than by screen appearance, and should confirm print placement in measurable terms: distance from the collar, centred or offset, and size in relation to the garment. Small text and fine detail behave differently in print than on screen, and a buyer who needs fine detail should ask early whether it will survive printing and washing at the intended size. Labelling and packaging should be agreed at the same time, since a custom tee range often needs its own label and pack presentation.

Sampling and approval discipline matter. Buyers should judge the printed sample for print colour, placement, hand feel and washed behaviour, and should give feedback that names the exact change needed. Once approved, the full order should be confirmed in writing, including blank, sizes, colours, print details, labelling and pack presentation, so that the delivered order matches the approved sample. Keeping that record also makes repeat orders straightforward.
